Christina Nelson, honor student, musician, always found time for others

Nelson, Christina, 22, died on February 6. Her family and friends will always remember the little girl who grew into a beautiful young woman.

Christina attended St. Coleman Elementary School in Pompano Beach and graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School where she received an academic scholarship to Florida State University. While in high school, Christina excelled in academics and in sports, particularly basketball and volleyball. At Florida State, Christina pursued a degree in Media Communications.

Christina volunteered more than 500 hours during her studies at Cardinal Gibbons. She worked as a Candy Striper at Holy Cross Hospital. She was a Pompano Beach Junior Lifeguard, accomplished pianist and an honor student.

During her senior year at Florida State, Christina interned with The Pelican Newspaper where she edited copy, organized bookkeeping and provided the staff with her Grandmother “Nona’s” homemade cookies.

With all of her accomplishments, Christina always found time to go fishing with her “Poppa” John Batdorf and meet up with the “Chicken Bunch” for dinner.

She will always be Diane’s little girl who grew up to be a talented, sweet and loving young lady who was a shining star with bright hopes for the future.

Her tragic death has left family and friends greatly saddened.

Christina is survived by her mother, Diane Pica; her maternal grandparents, Gina and John Batdorf, her Aunt Mona Pica; paternal grandmother Dora-Weber Delcore and husband John Delcore, paternal grandfather Edward Nelson; Uncles Kevin and Rick and many friends.

A mass will be offered on Friday [2/14] at 1 p.m. at St. Coleman Catholic Church

The memorial will be held at the Forest Lawn Funeral Home 200 West Copans Road, Pompano Beach, Florida 954-784-4000 on Saturday, 2/15 at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, family members request that donations be made to The Christina Nelson Scholarship Fund c/o Gina Batdorf, 421 SE 8 Ave., Pompano Beach, FL 33060
